     In the realm of jurisprudence, where centuries-old principles meet edge cutting advancements, a profound transformation is underway. The surge of artificial intelligence (AI) has ushered in a new era for the legal profession, challenging the very foundations upon which our legal systems are built. As algorithms increasingly shape legal research, decision-making, and even advocacy, the legal community finds itself at a crossroads of possibilities and ethical consideration. Yet, within this technological revolution lies complex legal implications that demand a meticulous exploration.

 Join me as we unravel the intricate tapestry of the legal implications of artificial intelligence, navigating the intersection where machine intelligence meets the age-old pillars of justice.

     Before delving into the legal implications of Artificial Intelligence (herein after refer to as AI). What is AI?,Artificial Intelligence, or AI, refers to the simulation of human intelligence by software-coded heuristics. The ideal characteristic of artificial intelligence is its ability to rationalize and take actions that have the best chance of achieving a specific goal.

One of the commonest form of AI in the legal field is e-discovery: the process of scanning electronic information to obtain non-privilege information relevant to a case or claim.

    Artificial Intelligence is poised to fundamentally reshape the practice of law. Some of the merits of AI in the legal field includes enhanced efficiency, improved research capabilities and cost reduction. The role of AI is multifaceted and transformative. 

AI is utilized in various capacities to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making processes within legal practice.

• The Revolution of AI in Legal Research:

AI-powered legal research platforms can help you do billable work faster, allowing you to spend more time putting that research to good use by counselling clients, negotiating with opposing counsel, or performing other higher-level work. 

AI in the legal technology industry has historically been more “extractive,” meaning it’s been generally used to crawl and pull information from a large database; however, with major recent developments in “generative” AI, legal technology is beginning to not only pull information but also create new, original content. This means you will see AI capabilities employed in a variety of angles including:

• Brief Analysis

This mines archives legal precedents to find supporting documentation that bolsters your legal argument. The more its used, the more it automatically “learn” and gets smarter, which makes it faster and easier to find and digest relevant documents.

• Context

Context is an AI-backed judicial analytics tool that analyses judge’s past decision, enabling lawyers to pinpoint the type of arguments a certain judge typically finds most persuasive. With access to not only ruling history, but also specific type of language a judge uses in court.

• Case-text 

This is a legal research platform that uses AI to help lawyers find relevant case law, statutes, and regulations quickly and efficiently.

This AI tools are used to obtain, analyse, or otherwise access identifiable data about human participants; or the AI tools acts as an extension or representative of the investigators by answering questions for potential, current, or past human research participants.

Benefits of AI in the Legal Field:

AI saves time: The biggest, most obvious benefit of AI applications is time savings. Computer system can analyse more information, more thoroughly than humans can, in a tiny fraction of the time. Computers can quickly:

Search through and identify discoverable or potentially relevant data of all forms and file types.

Conduct legal research that would take a skilled attorney day to complete.

Analyse contracts and other documents for errors, missing information and inconsistent language.

AI allows earlier and more accurate risk assessment: TAR tools, including predictive coding, can be used to review information in real time. This allows lawyers to identify potential risks earlier, advise clients wisely about their exposure and head off legal problems before they occur. 

AI produce higher-quality work: work produced by intelligent software can truly error-free. Specialized document software can enhance the organization of documents flawlessly maintain that organization, including all internal cross-reference, through the life of the document.

• Ethical Considerations

For all the promises that AI holds, there are certain issues surrounding its use in the legal field. One of the biggest consideration is around bias.

AI relies on algorithms to analyse vast amounts of data. If this data it draws from is bias, the result it produces will also be biased. This is important for any industry, but it can be detrimental for the legal profession as it can undermine the principle, justice, and equal treatment under the law. 

When lawyer relies on biased information, it can lead to unjust outcomes and compromised legal representation. When a decision has the potential to change the trajectory of people’s lives, such bias is simply unacceptable. 

• Accuracy:

Accuracy is another significant issue when it comes to AI. In 2022, ABA Legal Technology Survey Report found that accuracy is the top barrier preventing many in the legal field from adopting AI.

Algorithms can be difficult to interpret, and it can be challenging to understand how they arrive at their decisions or the source of their information. As a result, many in the legal field are sceptical of it. 

Some of the ethical consideration of AI includes trust and transparency, accountability, social benefit, and privacy and security.

The impact of AI on the Nigerian Legal System:

The impact of AI’s rapid evolution on the legal system cannot be understated. AI, with its labyrinthine algorithms and data-driven nature, stirs debates about ethics and human survival. The intricacies of AI, however, often remain elusive to many, from lawmakers to researchers and practitioners. This lack of insight into AI’s core workings hampers our ability to fully comprehend its implications

One of the most pressing challenges in Nigeria’s journey of embracing AI lies in the absence of a comprehensive legal framework. The lack of suitable legal framework leaves us grappling to complete the picture of AI’s integration into the society. It is evidence that a concerted effort is required to bridge the knowledge gap and synchronize legal frameworks with the pace of technological advancement. 

AI, a double-edge sword, carries the promise of heightened productivity and improved outcomes. However, its unrestrained application poses a potential threat to human rights. The advancement of AI must consistently incorporate rigorous measures to evaluate its impact during the initial phase. Neglecting to adhere to this precautionary approach may give rise to unintended consequences, with the potential to significantly alter the course of our rights.

While AI has the potential to significantly enhance productivity and outcomes in the legal field. The unbridled evolution of AI demands a cautious integration, underpinned by stringent measures to evaluate its implications in the early stages.
